What is Different about Antioxidants?

What is different about antioxidants and do you need to take them? Over the years there have been many fads and miracle pills that claimed to improve your health, or magically burn off fat.

Antioxidants Explained

An antioxidant is a molecule which stops other molecules from oxidising. When molecules oxidise they may turn into free radicals.

Free radicals are extremely harmful to your health. They attack healthy cells in your body, speed up the aging process and cause illness, disease and death.

Causes of free radical production include smoking, pollution, alcohol, stress and processed foods.

Antioxidants are widely found in foods. Each food has an ORAC value (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) and the higher the ORAC value of the food, the more free radicals it can combat or absorb.

So antioxidants protect your body from free radicals which has to be a good thing right?

Where Can You Get Antioxidants?

What is Different about Antioxidants? The best sources of antioxidants are foods, natural supplements and super foods. And it is worth trying to get antioxidants from all three sources.

There are an abundance of foods that contain what is known as antioxidants. Prime sources are fresh fruit and vegetables. Berries such as cranberries, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are higher in antioxidants than other fruits.

Vegetables that have high antioxidant content include kidney beans, red cabbage, broccoli, leafy greens, sprouts and pumpkins.

Nuts such as hazelnuts, cashews and sunflowers seeds also have high antioxidant content.

What Are Super Foods?

Some foods are widely known as “super foods” because of their huge antioxidant content. These super foods have a high ORAC value and include broccoli, spinach, salmon, oats, oranges, cranberries, pomegranate and blueberries.

Berries tend to have the highest antioxidant content of all super foods. The trouble is, those with the highest antioxidant content are the most difficult to get hold of.

For example, Wild Alaskan Blueberries have ten times the ORAC value of other blueberries. And unless you live in Alaska, these probably won’t be available to you, but there are supplements available that are made from Wild Alaskan Blueberries, so it may be worth while checking them out.

What is best about antioxidants, however you choose to take them, is the health and anti-aging benefits. Who would have guessed that such tiny molecules could actually slow down the aging process and have the potential to save your life?
