Many people don’t realise the importance of exercise as they age, and they see the gym as the domain of younger people. What If You Hate the Gym?You don’t have to pound the treadmill, or lift weights to slow the aging process through exercise. And instead of lifting weights, try lighter exercise such as Pilates or body weight exercises. If there are no classes near you, there are plenty of DVD’s you can use at home. You don’t need to exercise for hours. Instead, try doing 20 minutes of light exercise 3 times a week and you will start to see and feel results, without burning yourself out. Aerobics and long duration cardio exercises aren’t the best way to keep off the fat. In fact, they encourage your body to store fat so it can be used as fuel for the next time you exercise. I use a program called P.A.C.E. (Progressively Accelerating Cardiopulmonary Exertion) developed by Dr. Al Sears. It is a simple program based on interval training and is a great way to train you body to burn fat, not store it. Do speak to your doctor before you embark on any fitness program. They are sure to stress the importance of exercise and may be able to make recommendations based on your general health.
What Else Can You Do?In addition to exercise, it is important to reduce your exposure to free radicals as they accelerate the aging process. To do this, eliminate smoking, alcohol and processed foods from your daily regime. And improve your diet by taking in foods which are rich in antioxidants. It is also worth considering a nutritional supplement which is high in antioxidants. Blueberries are one of the richest sources of antioxidants, so it is worth looking for a supplement that contains blueberries.
